12/04- 12/05 Recording demos and the Rickshaw theatre show

This is us recording demos in our practice space. We are recording some songs that we just finished over the couple months. We share the practice space with mostly metal bands and "Nickelback wanna be" a style of music that really haunts Vancouver ever since Nickelback hit it big. Hundreds of bands trying to ride the wake of their fame trying to cash in on the fan base they've created, its all rubbish music really. Its such a cash grab that the CFOX radio station made a ridiculously bias "festival" designated specifically for that style of music specifically called the "SEEDS Festival".
Anyways back to the point that it actually makes it hard to record a decently dynamic song when some guy is screaming a demonic-overlord voice and drummer that has chops to serve satans supper a door down from you.

Liam Gallagher articulates this the best...

The Orpheans Psyche Out The Rickshaw

By STUART DERDEYN WED, DEC 2 2009 HEAR CANDY

Below is the info letter sent from Green Hour Band/The Orpheans member Jeremy Andrew. Sadly, we didn't get this info early enough to give it a play in our listings package, but I thought the gig sounded right cool - particularly the fact that someone is doing ye olde hippie visuals thingye. Plus, someone who gets name-checked on James Brown, Howling Wolf and Jimi Hendrix probaby merits some attention.
Plus, the Rickshaw is my new totally fave place to see a gig. Feels like a real concert room. All dingy and hard.
Read on:
Hey Stuart,

While the lead singer of the popular Vancouver psych outfit, The Green Hour Band, has been galavanting around Europe, a new side project called The Orpheans has formed. The Orpheans is composed of Randy Kramer and Nick Eccleston of The Green Hour Band, and local busker Mr D. B. Buxton. The guys from the GHB discovered D. B. last April playing on the street at Robson and Granville, and promptly offered him the opening spot at their show at The Fox Porn Theatre May 1st. Whereupon he proceeded to astound the masses with his take on 60s garage classics and vintage blues standards. The project that has formed around this talent is nothing short of jaw-dropping, as D. B. struts like James Brown, wails like Howling Wolf, and shreds guitar like Jimi Hendrix.

The show this Saturday, December 5th at The Rickshaw Theatre, will feature The Orpheans along with several other young bands that are forming the foundation for a very exciting new garage scene in sleepy little Vancouver. Also on the bill are Indian Wars, a band who makes no apologies for their appreciation of bands like Atlanta's Black Lips. They bring a blown-out drunken swagger to impressively crafted pop gems with a little Hank Williams thrown in for good measure. Another band with a love for all things 60s are The Polished Rocks. Upon handing me their demo last summer they proclaimed that it was recorded on six flats of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a sheet of acid, and charmingly enough it was very apparent. Last on the bill is the youngest of all the bands, Student Teacher, who may or may not be legal to drink at the bars they've been playing for the past six months. They combine 60s girl group bounce with a snot-nosed, piss in your corn flakes attitude.

As if all of those great bands weren't enough, I'll be DJing a selection that draws from both the new and old of everything psych, and The West Coast Psonic Lantern Company will be doing live oil projections on The Rickshaw's theatre sized screen!

Cheers
Jeremy Andrew

The Orpheans play the rickshaw!

There is a show coming up this Saturday December 5th in Vancouver that can't be missed, garage and soul, get cultured be entertained. see and listen to the roots of rock and roll before your very eyes, young guys with guitars playing the hearts out.

The line up will be:
Indian Wars, the Orpheans, the Polished Rocks, and Student Teacher. and there will be a DJ Jeremy Andrew spinning solid garage tunes that will flutter your heart all night. Also a light show by Jen and Darren of the West Coast Psonic Latern Co. which is an authentic 60's style liquid light show display projected onto the back drop of the bands. This in combonation everything happening tonight, is not to be shunned or forgotten.

The Rickshaw (http://www.rickshawtheater.com/) is a very large venue, that used to be an old 1970's Kungfu cinema, and now is an amazing and really desirable venue for out of town bands to play in. The sound in the room is quite massive and stage is huge. Very much comparable to the late Richards on Richards but is also an all ages venue.
